Josephine

Country Head, Singapore

I'm a travel junkie, an animal lover (2 dogs, 1 cat and countless Pikachu plushies at home), have an endless thirst for beer and an everlasting love for Japan and Game of Thrones!

I studied Communications in Nanyang Technological University. When I was fresh out of university, I assisted my professor in research projects involving health risk communication specializing in cancer. This means as a fresh grad, I coded on Wincati software, was a bit of an SPSS nerd, did questionnaire design, hired and fired, drafted a research paper, and was also a paperwork slave. I truly enjoyed it, but stumbled upon another experience that got me going even more - it was an eCommerce business in one of Rocket Internet's largest fashion units. There and then, I had the opportunity to touch social media, campaign planning, category management, and a lot of business development.

Rather than a job, I look for a workplace that offers me an opportunity to grow in a career. This has mainly got to do with the people around me, and areas I believe I can excel in, but may not have fully discovered it yet. And I chose to work at ShopBack because of the people and its leaders. At ShopBack I'm surrounded by so many talents from different industries - logistics, tech, eCommerce, finance, gaming. There's so much to learn.

It's also the business model that piqued my interest. Affiliate marketing is massive in developed markets, but still a pindrop in South-east Asia. ShopBack today is changing this by transforming into the definitive guide to online shopping for customers, whilst making it cost effective for our partners. Henry had a clear mission to build a community of smarter shoppers—and as someone who was from another eCommerce company, this was something I strongly believed in.

Currently I take care of the growth of Singapore and Malaysia markets. Basically, if you see ShopBack in the streets or in your email boxes (and I hope you do), this is part of the team's initiatives! The team also exists to onboard your biggest wishes (most recently, such as Uber, Net-a-Porter, Apple, RWS and tons more). The ever-changing online industry is always a challenge - the best way to counter this is to make a decision fast, and execute fast.

The cold, hard truth about life at ShopBack? It's fast, gruelling, challenging and most of all, rewarding - not just in terms of results, but experiences as well. ShopBack is like an army family where there's absolutely no bullsh*t and everyone aims to achieve a common goal, TOGETHER. There's nothing better than a unified, hardworking team that knows how to have a good time too. My time here has made me realize there's so much I could do, at the same time it also made me realize how much I didn't know! The opportunity has been great for me to grow in knowledge as well as a better person.

My best piece of advice for people who are choosing between an established company and a startup: know what you want, and what the company wants. The most important thing is to have alignment in order to make a relationship work.
